FL Growers Mixed with Optimism & Challenge

Jerry Newlin V. P. of Citrus Production for Orange-Co in Arcadia, Jerry Newlin, also presently leads the Florida Citrus Production Managers Association. Southeast AgNetNewlin says growers have mixed optimism and challenges going into this year’s Florida harvest. Newlin has also been instrumental in working with Southeast AgNet to develop an on-line method for growers and production managers to easily share their field experiences in ongoing efforts to control and live with citrus canker and greening diseases.

New Housing To Address Farmworker Needs in SW FL

Hurricanes of 2004 and 2005 devastated farmworker housing in many critical agriculture regions of Florida, which made an already tight farm labor situation even worse in recent months. Thanks to many parts of the community coming together to help re-establish housing for ag labor in the region, a new development recieves a ‘groundblessing’ Oct 28 in Arcadia. In this report, Peace River Valley Citrus Growers Assoc Executive Barbara Carlton explains the project is the result of lots of efforts by lots of different groups and people throughout the state and region.

When Barbara Carlton of the Peace River Valley Citrus Growers Association, and Orange-Co VP of Citrus Production Jerry Newlin, who also represents the Florida Citrus Production Managers Association, approached us at Southeast AgNet Southeast AgNetlate this week about the growers’ need for a web-based forum to share canker and greening ‘field trials’, we decided not to waste much time. New Website Presents Canker & Greening ‘Grower Trials’

Florida citrus growers and production managers have been seeking a way to directly share field trial experiences with other growers in hopes of learning more first hand knowledge more quickly from each other in canker and greening control efforts.
