July Egg Production

USDA Nat'l Agriculture Statistics Service The latest report on egg production from USDA’s Agricultural Statistics service shows July egg production in Georgia was down one percent from a year ago and hatch of egg-type chicks was down one percent.

Labor Regulations Cause Concern

FBThe Department of Homeland Security has announced new regulations to crack down on illegal immigrants, which American Farm Bureau officials say will make it more difficult for farmers to find workers to harvest their crops and will likely lead to increased arrests of workers and employers.

Citrus Expo Smashes Pre-Registration Records

2007 Citrus Expo Citrus Expo has smashed all pre-registration records of its 16 year history with well over 600 growers pre-registering for this year’s event Wednesday and Thursday at Lee Civic Center in Ft Myers. Commercial citrus growers are still welcome to attend and register at the door, and hundreds more are expected to do so. The seminar hall has been enlarged with theatre seating arranged for a larger crowd, and more than 150 exhibitors will pack the trade show. Registration is free for commercial citrus growers, grove managers, owners and industry leaders, doors open at 8:00 a.m. both days of the show.

Soybean Rust Report

Asian soybean rust was reported at low levels in soybean sentinel plots in Jackson and Jefferson counties in the Florida Panhandle. Rust was also reported in Mobile County, Alabama where it was detected in a sentinel plot located within a commercial soybean field.

Update: This week, rust was found in three more Alabama counties, including a soybean sentinel plot in Escambia County, a commercial soybean field in Monroe County and a kudzu patch in Covington County.

Nutrient management is critical to water quality and a nutrient management plan helps producers to minimize the environmental impacts of raising livestock while improving the efficiency of their operations, according to agronomist Ben Moore with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Alabama.
