Citrus Hall of Fame Celebration Next Friday March 7

Florida Department of Citrus is among the supporters of the The Citrus Hall of Fame of Florida’s Citrus Celebration luncheon coming up March 7 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Meanwhile, the Florida Citrus Festival is reportedly shutting down, and depending on what happens in that situation maybe the confusion between the two Hall of Fames can be quieted once and for all. By the way, the event next Friday is the one involving many citrus industry leaders and growers who have traditionally handled Citrus Hall of Fame activities in the state.

The theme “Seeking Profitability Through Interim Innovations” aptly describes the mood of growers and industry as the seminars program for Citrus Expo August 20 & 21, 2008 begins to come together. Steering Committee members will soon have a list of seminar titles to consider from earlier group and grower input, and growers around the state are encouraged to discuss their seminar wants and needs with a committee member from their area.

Florida Citrus Mutual Area Meetings Set

Florida Citrus Mutual has scheduled its 2008 Area Meetings where local members are invited to meet and greet staff and discuss important issues. Lunch or dinner will be served at each meeting. The locations of the meeting do not allow for booths to be set up, however, Allied Members are invited to attend to meet citrus growers in their area and FCM staff.

Extension economist Don Shurley with the UGA Cotton Team says even though there is no farm bill yet, he thinks growers are looking at other factors to determine their planting decisions.

Export Growth

At the USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum, last week, Undersecretary Mark Keenum announced that US agricultural exports are now expected to hit another record with growth of nearly 20 percent compared to last year.

High-value product exports such as fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, combined with animal products are forecast to rise a combined $3.5 billion in 2008 to record levels.
