Cattlemen Looking Forward to a New Farm Bill
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Executive Director of Legislative Affairs, Colin Woodall, flew from Washington D.C. to meet with Region II Cattlemen in Columbus, Georgia to give an update on what’s happening in our nation’s capitol, and of course the main topic was the farm bill.

Congressional negotiators continue to insist they will have a farm bill finished soon, but Alabama agriculture commissioner Ron Sparks is less confident.

Many people are familiar with Dee River Ranch in Aliceville, Alabama and were proud to hear Annie & Mike Dee were the recipients of the 2008 NRCS Excellence in Conservation Award. Mike talks about their operation and we also hear from Dr. Billy Powell with the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, just one of those happy to see Dee River Ranch receive this award. 

There have been questions as to whether a few updates need to be made with the beef checkoff, and the Cattlemen’s Beef Board Chairman looks at what is happening right now with any possible changes.
Preservation of natural resources includes preserving historic cultural resources as well according to Teresa Paglione, cultural resources specialist with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Alabama.
And those new beef products explained about above has Ed Whatley with the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association excited about their potential.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has a new field representative for their Southeast Region II which includes Alabama, Florida, & Georgia. Nate Yeager has been in this position for a couple of months now and said he has enjoyed traveling across the area meeting producers. 
Cattle producers from across the country were in Washington D.C. last week taking part in the annual NCBA Spring Legislative Session. Dr. Billy Powell with the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association was one of those and said many items were discussed, especially the farm bill which is on everyone’s minds right now.
