Greening Talks Yield Research Priorities Directives-full series

Dr Robert Davis, USDA & Member Nat'l Academy of Sciences I’ve continued to add segments to this series, so I’m updating this post to be sure our citrus visitors hear what is now this full eight-part series with Dr Robert Davis. Among the scientists gathered in Ft Pierce recently to discuss greening and canker research, Davis is a scientist with USDA at the Beltsville MD lab and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. These reports features his comments about the greening challenge from various angles as he shares his thoughts about the value of the efforts being made by the industry to solve the greening problem.

FDOC Brings Nat’l Academy of Sciences to “Greening” Research

Southeast AgNet’s Ernie Neff caught up with Dr Muir to ask for details of how the Academy came about and how they are structured to be able to possibly help the Florida citrus industry. Of particular interest is how scientists who are involved with the Academy actually donate their professional time, while the citrus grower dollars allocated to NAS will be in support of out-of-pocket and NAS systems expenses for these scientific teams to become involved.

Joe Marshburn (l), Norm Todd (r) and the late Richard Graves Jr (no photo avail) were inducted at the event held at the Hall of Fame’s new home at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL. A member of Anita Bryantthe Citrus Hall of Fame for her years of effective promotion of Florida citrus, Anita Bryant (r) shared a rendition of her famous song “The Florida Sunshine Tree” for the crowd, and for our listeners in this interview with Southeast AgNet’s Ernie Neff.

FL Legislative Committee Calls for Citrus Referendum

The Joint Legislative Sunset Committee Monday recommended the Florida Legislature create an up or down referendum on the Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC), proposing the grower vote take place in conjunction with the 2010 Scientific Research Box Tax Referendum. Lawmakers yet have to decide whether or not to move forward, but many expect it to perculate in some manner. Stay tuned, we’ll have comments as we catch up with the players.

Citrus Hall of Fame Celebration Next Friday March 7

Florida Department of Citrus is among the supporters of the The Citrus Hall of Fame of Florida’s Citrus Celebration luncheon coming up March 7 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Meanwhile, the Florida Citrus Festival is reportedly shutting down, and depending on what happens in that situation maybe the confusion between the two Hall of Fames can be quieted once and for all. By the way, the event next Friday is the one involving many citrus industry leaders and growers who have traditionally handled Citrus Hall of Fame activities in the state.
